Evidence-Based Clinical Assessment

Autism & ADHD Assessments

For children, young people and adults — built on recognised clinical standards, and designed to be the beginning of a personalised pathway, not simply the end of one.

Beyond a Diagnosis

Assessment is where understanding begins.

Every assessment at True Neuro follows recognised clinical standards — DSM-5 criteria and NICE guidelines, with the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) forming part of our autism assessments. But a label alone isn't the goal. We look at how autism or ADHD presents in this individual, in this life, so that support can be matched to the person rather than the diagnosis.

Autism Assessment

Children · Young People · Adults

Looking beyond diagnosis to understand the individual.

Our assessment process includes the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), alongside a comprehensive developmental history, detailed clinical interview and assessment against DSM-5 criteria, in accordance with NICE guidelines. We explore communication, social interaction, sensory processing, emotional regulation, executive functioning, daily living skills, education or employment, strengths and personal goals — not simply whether the criteria for autism spectrum disorder are met.

Signs in Adults

  • Social situations feel confusing, draining or difficult to navigate
  • Needing time alone to recover after interaction
  • Strong preference for routine, predictability or focused interests
  • Sensory sensitivity to noise, light, texture or busy environments
  • A history of anxiety, burnout or emotional overload linked to long-term masking
  • Recognising traits in yourself after a family member's assessment

Signs in Children & Young People

  • Finding peer relationships difficult or tiring
  • Communicating differently from other children of a similar age
  • Becoming distressed by change, uncertainty or transitions
  • Intense interests, or a strong need to talk about particular topics
  • Repetitive movements, routines or patterns of play
  • Sensory sensitivities, or seeking certain sensory experiences

A diagnosis isn't about limiting a person. It's about understanding their profile more accurately, so that support — practical recommendations, school or workplace adjustments, therapy, or wider support for sensory regulation and daily life — can be better matched to the individual.

Child & Young People ADHD Assessment

30+ Years Combined Clinical Experience

Helping children and young people thrive beyond a diagnosis.

Our private ADHD assessments follow DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and NICE guidelines, combining a detailed clinical interview, developmental and family history, gold-standard questionnaires and rating scales, and screening for co-existing conditions including autism, anxiety, depression and sleep or learning difficulties — so treatment addresses the whole child, not simply attention.

Adult ADHD Assessment

Diagnosis, Treatment & Medication Management

ADHD doesn't end in childhood.

ADHD is now recognised as a lifelong condition. Many adults seek assessment after years of difficulty with work, relationships or daily responsibilities, often without understanding the underlying cause. Our assessment follows DSM-5 criteria and NICE guidelines — a comprehensive clinical interview, developmental and family history, gold-standard questionnaires, and consideration of co-existing conditions such as anxiety, autism, learning difficulties or sleep disorders.

When Should You Consider an Assessment?

  • Attention difficulties are affecting education, employment or everyday life
  • Symptoms have been present since childhood, even if they've changed over time
  • Organisation, planning or time management are persistent challenges
  • Impulsivity or restlessness causes difficulties at home or work
  • You have a family history of ADHD, or would like a second opinion
  • You're currently taking ADHD medication and would like to review your options

Common Symptoms of Inattention

  • Difficulty concentrating or sustaining attention
  • Becoming easily distracted, or losing items
  • Difficulty starting or completing tasks
  • Poor time management and missed deadlines

Common Symptoms of Hyperactivity & Impulsivity

  • Feeling restless, or unable to relax
  • Talking excessively, or interrupting conversations
  • Acting without considering consequences
  • Low frustration tolerance, or impulsive decisions

Following diagnosis, we work collaboratively on an individualised treatment plan — which may include medication management, therapeutic support for emotional wellbeing, and practical recommendations for the workplace or further education.

Understanding Your Brain Beyond the Diagnosis

Assessment is only the beginning.

Where appropriate, we offer advanced EEG and qEEG Brain Mapping as part of our wider Brain Health Programme. This safe, non-invasive test records the brain's electrical activity, helping us understand how different areas of the brain are functioning and communicating with one another.

The EEG does not diagnose autism or ADHD, and it does not replace a recognised clinical assessment. It adds an additional layer of understanding about how your brain's networks are functioning — informing a personalised programme that may include Neurofeedback or Transcranial Photobiomodulation (tPBM).
